MAIDEN CASTLE ROAD
MASTERPLAN
DORCHESTER, DORSET

The defining features of this Duchy of Cornwall site include an enclosure of mature trees together with splendid views of Maiden Castle and the Hardy Monument.  Our sketch masterplan responds positively to both.

The street scene opposite indicates an informal crescent, terminated at the north by a small triangular green. Adjacent to this is a row of terraced houses, inflected towards Maiden Castle, which would pick up the line of trees and bank that divides the two adjacent fields.

We have looked to vernacular Dorset houses, drawing inspiration from those surrounding the Green in Fordington, for example. At the same time we were keen to ensure that the new houses do not look out of place amongst those of the surrounding streets, and have therefore predominantly proposed semi-detached units. We have indicated that the walls could be in mellow red brick, the roofs in slate, and the doors and windows in painted timber.
