HINTON ST GEORGE
VILLAGE HOUSING - SOMERSET
Hinton St George is a picturesque village in rural South Somerset consisting of houses almost exclusively constructed in local Ham stone. Our development includes ten homes, three of which are affordable. There are four types ranging in size from 2 bedroom cottages to 4 bedroom detached houses.
The layout is conceived as an extension to the village high street, with half the houses situated on the existing road. A lane provides access to the remaining houses, as well as two distinct public spaces: a small village green and a hardscaped parking court.
The architecture and materials seek precedent in the adjacent conservation area. Some of the homes are inspired by the Georgian houses in the village and feature sash windows. Others follow the vernacular houses and include casement windows.
The walls are formed in Ham stone or clad in timber, and the roofs are covered in clay double Roman tiles or natural slates. The lane is a shared surface, with no pavements, and the houses have small planting strips to their frontage. Walls, gates and trees assist in defining the public realm.
